A Recipe for Gratitude Greatness

Most people know that gratitude boosts happinessbut there’s a difference between knowing it and doing it. And here’s a difference between doing it and really doing gratitude as effectively as possible.

There’s a recipe that we like a lot at Happy Brain Science:

  • What’s the specific behavior you’re grateful for?
  • What’s the emotional impact it had on you?
  • And what’s the organizational impact?

Let me give you a real-life, not-made-up example:

How to Use Specific Gratitude at Work

Ayla (sitting right behind the camera there), I am so grateful for you setting up this video equipment so that we could film video after video today (Specific Behavior).

Emotional Impact: It feels so good and productive to get so many videos made when I’ve been too busy with workshops and various other projects to get this done over the past few months. And it just feels productive, and it feels like we’re gonna help people through these videos, which is what our work is all about, after all.

And, Business Impact: These videos are going to help people! And, I hope, help Happy Brain Science at the same time as helping people watching these videos.

Thank you, Ayla.

Real-life example I hope you can learn from.

Give (and Get) a Gratitude Boost!

Next time you want to thank somebody, don’t just say, “Thanks!”

Say, “Thanks for doing a), which made me feel b), and helped the business c).”

Then you’re really getting to specific gratitude that boosts the mood of the recipient of your gratitudeand boosts your own mood even more. Boosted mood equals boosted results.
